Spin and orbital magnetism of rare-earth dopants

Rare-earth based nanomaterials are promising candidates for future generation of magnetic storage, and they also offer good prospect for applications in spintronic devices. We propose to explore the anisotropic magnetic properties of the rare-earth adatoms on ultra-thin insulating films, and the rare-earth dopants in bulk topological insulators. The investigation will employ the density-functional theory combined with the many-body theory, which is necessary for an accurate description of the electron correlations in the f-shells of the rare-earth atoms. The state-of-the-art total-energy calculations will allow us to explore and predict the materials properties on the scale of individual atoms, which is important for future technological applications.
